Senior Constable Jason Todd and police dog Ila were at the cordon during the standoff with Jan Molenaar in Napier when Jason received a radio message to say they had won the national police dog championship.

This is a second consecutive win for a Wellington dog handler. The competition didn’t take place last year – but in 2007 it was won by Constable Ben O’Connor and Utah.

Jason describes Ila, the first bitch to win the police dog championships, as a little dog at just 29 kilos, but he reckons that a good half of that is heart. “What she lacks in weight she makes up for in determination.”
