Waitematā scooped the national prize of the Territorial Forces Employer Support Council (TFESC) Employer of the Year Award at a prestigious ceremony held in the Grand Hall at Parliament last month.

Guests included Associate Minister of Defence Heather Roy; Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae; Chairman of the Territorial Force Employer Support Council John Allen; UK High Commissioner George Fergusson and US Charges d’Affaires Hon Dr David Keegan.

The three award categories: national, public and wider state sector and private sector were presented by Heather Roy.

North Shore Area Commander Inspector Les Paterson, who actively encourages the use of leadership skills and techniques learned by members of the Territorial Forces to develop his own staff, accepted the award from the Minister.

“The training provided to staff in the Territorial Forces should not be seen as a disruption, but a real asset to policing,” says Les.

“Personnel with Territorial Forces experience are generally self-starters who exhibit leadership and discipline, skills that are valuable in regular working life.

Waitematā District will continue to support officers who wish to join the Territorial Forces, providing this does not impact negatively on their regular police duties.”
